FAQs

CLASSES AND CURRICULUM

Does my child need to have any prior coding experience?
All students ranging from beginners to advanced are welcome. BCRC curriculum is designed for students with any level of prior experience, including none!

My student has programmed before. Will this class still be challenging for him or her?
Yes! Each student is tracked individually, and works on a variety of platforms. Our instructors will work with your student and family to provide instruction that is appropriate for their experience level and desired.

How old does my child have to be?
We work with students K-high school. If your child is younger than kindergarten please get on our mailing list, we do do preschool classes throughout the year!

Is there homework?
There is no required homework. However, students often freely chose to continue working on their projects at home for fun. Most students who come into BCRC spend a good amount of time working on their lessons at home, that way we can help them w/ bugs in class.

Does my child need to bring a computer?
We provide computers for students. However, some students choose to bring their own computers because they are more comfortable working on them.

What will my child be able to do after this course?
All of our classes are self-paced, so there are no pre-determined final projects or skills at the end of our courses. Generally speaking, your student will be able to build complex Scratch and Javascript applications, from Flappy Bird to FourSquare and anything in between. Because our courses are project-based but NOT tutorial-driven, after your child completes a BCRC project, they will have the ability to create their own projects at home.

Do you use a specific curriculum?
We use a combination of tools based on the needs of our students. For certain platforms, we've found using existing tools works best, like Bits Box.  However, most platforms have inadequate or incomplete tutorials so we have built a large library of lessons for our students.

My child really wants to work a specific project or technology.  Can you help him?
Yes!  Have them bring it in, and we can work on it together.  We try not to limit ourselves and are excited to help your student explore new platforms and technologies.

Am I allowed to stay in with my child during the lesson?
The general rule of thumb is we ask parents to drop off their kids because it affects how the kids learn and behave during their lessons when their parents are around. We want them to feel that this is their “club house”, a cool place to learn to code and have fun while doing it.  In addition, in Covid times the less people in the space the better.

How do I choose between one hour per week and two hours per week?
It’s really up to your child’s interest level and availability. If your child is engaged and really into coding, then two hours a week can be beneficial in that there’s more momentum each lesson with less to remember from the last lesson.
